On November 3rd, our Editor Brian be playing games for 12 hours straight to raise funds for sick kids!
Extra Life is a fundraising and gaming marathon to support Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.
Alright friends, here’s the 411.
Yes, I like playing games. A lot. But this isn’t about that. Let’s talk about my childhood.
When I was six, I had what was initially thought to be meningitis, which turned out to be a ‘virus of unknown origin’ that just mimicked all the symptoms of meningitis. I can assure you, that’s equally as unpleasant, especially when they don’t know how to treat you.
I remember bits and pieces of this; c’mon, it was two decades ago. I remember my elderly grandmother carrying me to Crumlin Children’s Hospital. I also remember not being able to stand to give samples. Finally, I remember, vividly, my mother getting off the phone with the doctor and saying “If he gets sick again being him in”, and vomiting onto the living room carpet literal seconds later.
It wasn’t a fun time.
Above all else, though, I remember lying in a hospital bed, staring into the night, miserable, and listening to the little twerp in the next bed describe, in excruciating detail, the ingredients in his 5-Alive fruit drink. Now I don’t know what was wrong with him, but I couldn’t keep water down so I’m assuming it wasn’t as bad as my thing. I hated that child. Truly, honestly hated him. I still do, because I associate both him and that goddam juice with one of the worst times of my life.
Public healthcare in Ireland is alright, and in New Zealand it’s pretty good too. But we can always do more to help sick kids, whether it’s to get the care they need, or just to get a Switch to liven up the ward. I’m not fussed about where this money goes, as long as it makes a shitty time in someone else’s life a bit more bearable.
This is for the kids.
